The National SACNAS Organization encourages Chicano/Latino and Native American students, along with students of other races, to pursue higher education; and to assist them in obtaining the advanced degrees necessary for science research, industry, leadership, and teaching careers at all levels. For over 30 years, SACNAS has provided strong national leadership towards improving and expanding opportunities for minorities in the scientific workforce, also mentoring college students in science, mathematics and engineering. read more >
Our chapter takes great pride in representing the National SACNAS Organization. They have recognized us as being most active chapter (2008) and exemplary in our efforts to promote student success at UCSB (2006). Over the past years we have provided many professional development and leadership opportunities for our members, specializing in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. We have also coordinated outreach activities in some local high schools, contributed to the beautification of the campus area and Isla Vista, and organized other community service activities in order to make our home a better place and to encourage younger generations to strive for the same.
With support from distinguished faculty such as Ofelia Aguirre, Professors Kenneth Millett and Hector Ceniceros of the Mathematics Department, and the staff of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), UCSB-SACNAS works to create and maintain a support system and networks amongst STEM students, faculty, and staff.
